May Day Tea, 2014

A Student Production and Celebration

May 15, 2014

At the end of the school year we have a “May Day Tea.” It is the kids’ chance to show their parents and the community at large some of the things they’ve learned over the course of the school year. The kids serve tea and cookies, achievements for the year are recognized, and the kids put on a show which they have largely written themselves. Because of the cultural and arts enrichment program which the kids have been taking part in throughout the year, they are usually pretty psyched, and they always do a great job. It is wonderful they have this opportunity to learn about public performances and presentations — a skill which will serve them well throughout their lives.

One of the enrichment activities is about writing; this year the kids worked on poetry. Four students had poems published in the 2014 edition of “Signatures from Big Sky”, the Montana Student Literary/Art Magazine. Each of them read their poem; outstanding!

One student received a scholarship from the Alpine Artisans
to attend a “Passport on a Plate” class given by the Holter Museum of Art in Helena. He will be “Traveling the World” learning about other places and cultures,
cooking and tasting as he goes.

One of the students’ art projects was creating a mural about this place we call Ovando, Montana.

This year the kids studied North and Central American history, learning about the early inhabitants and their cultures, and settlement and domination by western cultures from Europe. We learned of some of the things we take for granted today which came from these now mostly lost cultures.

They were able to reduce centuries of conflict into a succinct few minutes of the game “Gold, Corn, and Rock,” known to most as “Rock-Paper-Scissors”.

The cultures of the Incas, the Aztecs, and the Mayans were destroyed, but they left us wondering about what we had lost in the process.

The kids were exposed to Shakespeare‘s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by reading, through a movie, and by seeing a professional production of it. They took that theme and brought it up to date in a production of their own.

As part of their study of ancient civilizations the kids learned some Chinese history, and they created a great dragon modeled after those used to celebrate the New Year.

Then we had a great finale where the kids performed “All You Need is Love,”
by The Beetles.
